When coming up with a tee shirt design to replace my angst for the cancelled Miami Open I wanted a design to not only reflect the style and vibrancy of Miami but also the historical significance of the tournament to the world of tennis and the City of Miami.
Before I moved to Miami 12 years ago I had been coming down to the tournament since the early 1990’s when it was called The Lipton.
I was always struck by the event and it has always been one of my favorite tournaments in the world. It was the first tournament to be called the 5th Grand Slam. Now a few share that brand aspiration as the game has expanded globally.
As my mind recollected past matches I remember when Marcel Rios became #1 in the world and when Andre Agassi was on his come back.
I remember Steffi Graf and her vicious forehand and cutting slice backhand as well as the emergence of the Williams Sisters.
The one match that stands out the most to me from the many to select from was the 2017 Men’s Semi Final between Roger Federer and Nick Kyrgios.
Watching the replays on YouTube doesn’t give it justice. I’ve tried. There is one 10 minute clip of highlights and one watered down version by the ATP.
Experiencing it Live and in person was an electric atmosphere and sense of competitive fire that can be elusive at many professional tennis matches. This one had it all.
Legend vs Bad Boy. Scripted vs Unscripted. When both these players turn it on it is a delight for all to witness.
With the 2020 Miami Open cancelling here is my tribute of what the Magic City and the sport of tennis mean to me.
I wanted to give the shirt a tribute to Art Deco and Mid Century design with a shirt that people would be proud to wear in a style, color and size to suit the buyers self expressions. Here is what I came up with.
THE BEST TENNIS MATCH IN THE HISTORY OF MIAMI
A city branded by aqua vistas, trendy culture, and spectacular cloud bursts had metamorphized Key Biscayne into a place where fans witnessed the best tennis match in the history of Miami.
In a town known to be fashionably late Miami Tennis fans filled every seat ready to witness this compelling match from the strike of the first ball. Fans were treated to three titillating sets of tie-breaker tennis that pushed the creative shot making and athleticism to its limits.
The match was a storm of high performance play with each point being fought with intense fervor and spicy flavor that only Miami fans can appreciate. Each moment was as intoxicating as the next as each player showed off his impressive arsenal of power and tenacity with no shortage of flair.
As the match neared its zenith so did the intensity climaxing with a volcanic eruption that left all who witnessed to enjoy one the sports most artistic, stylistic and combative spectacles in the history of the the Magic City.
The Crandon Park Tennis Center had witnessed the Greatest of All Time (Roger Federer) and the talented and temperamental (Nick Kyrgios) as they pushed each other to jaw dropping heights that will leave fans reminiscing for years to come.
This shirt was designed for fans of Miami and tennis players everywhere who crave inspiration to propel themselves to greater heights on and off the tennis court.
